Terms and conditions for the use of the database
- Introduction/scope of DB and these terms
The AfricaLics database is an internet-based platform for membership management and related services. The database stores and connects data of scholars in Africa and the rest of the world. The database is an important part of the AfricaLics network and links scholar’s information to other regionalics. This terms and conditions (“Agreement”) govern the use of the AfricaLics database by registered users (“Members”).
AfricaLics reserves the right to deny registration and access to the AfricaLics database.
- General terms
Unless stipulated otherwise in this Agreement, the member shall not duplicate, distribute, sell, offer on a website or on a platform or similar to third parties, commercially exploit, create derivative works from, or otherwise make available any information obtained from the AfricaLics Database. AfricaLics may modify, update, or discontinue the AfricaLics Database at any time without liability to the member.
- Availability of data
AfricaLics database will be generally accessible for use 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and shall be available at least 95 percent of that time on a yearly average. Downtimes in regular maintenance windows, downtimes that are required for the purpose of emergency fixes and downtimes that are based on unscheduled outages shall not be considered within the calculation of the actual availability. AfricaLics reserves the right to shut down parts or the whole of the database without prior notice to resolve any technical issues that may arise at any time.
Members can only be able to view other members limited profile information. This includes names (s), contact details and area of specialization. Other information can only be accessed by AfricaLics and the profile owners.
- Intellectual property rights
AfricaLics database with all of its functionalities shall remain the exclusive property of AfricaLics and is copyrighted. All rights are reserved. The data which is provided through the AfricaLics database belongs to the data suppliers (“Member”).
- Liability
All data in AfricaLics database is provided by the members and not controlled by AfricaLics. AfricaLics makes no warranty regarding the accuracy, completeness, correctness, reliability or otherwise with respect to such data.
- Updates of services
AfricaLics will provide reasonable notice of any substantial modifications of the database by email to members which are registered users. These changes shall be subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement, and shall not materially alter use of AfricaLics Database in an adverse manner.
- Use of the data from AfricaLics database
The members shall use the data from AfricaLics database for networking and collaborations purposes only . The account will be accessible to registered persons only (named user). The member may access and use the database through AfricaLics web interface.
- Data protection
The protection of your privacy and your personal data is very important to us, and this is a key factor in how we design and implement our activities on the Internet.
Personal data refers to information that can be used to identify a person, i.e. details that can be traced back to a person. This includes for example the person’s name, e-mail address or telephone number. Personal data is only collected, processed, and used by AfricaLics only. This data will not be shared with any third parties.
- Assignment of rights
AfricaLics member shall not be entitled to assign any rights or obligations under this Agreement to any third parties.
- Confidentiality
The member is obliged to treat as strictly confidential all data on AfricaLics database.
- Governing law and jurisdiction
This Agreement is exclusively governed by, and construed in accordance with the laws of Kenya (The data protection ACT). In case of any disputes, the courts of Kenya, shall have exclusive jurisdiction if the member is a legal person under public law or not a resident in Kenya.
